Well, most likely your gutters are clogged from something. Most times accumulation of leaves, pollen, flowers, granules from shingles or other items will gather around the opening for the downspout and eventually block it. When the downspout gets clogged then all the water from the roof will not have anywhere to go except into the gutter eventually causing it to overflow and start to escape through the least resistant route possible. This means it might be going down your siding or back up and under the shingles before it finds its way to the ground. The damage water can cause on homes and businesses due to neglecting to clean gutters can be very costly.

If your already in the predicament, immediately get someone to come clean the gutters and ask for before and after pictures to ensure they were cleaned properly and thoroughly so you have no more problems during the next rain storm. Make sure they blow out downspouts and if those are clogged as well. It may cost extra but have them unclogged to prevent future problems.

Next access the damage if any that has been caused from the water overflowing. You may be lucky and have caught it early on. Now if you have, maybe consider setting up gutter cleanings from that gutter cleaner you had come by. They should be able to give a good recommendation on how often they should come out but at least have the gutters cleaned once per year maybe 2-3 times if you have a lot of trees dropping leaves half the year.

Now in the case that doesn’t fix the water overflowing or the gutters or downspouts were not clogged to begin with. You may have a blocked or clogged drain pipe that the gutters and downspouts feed into. If this is the case the gutter cleaning company may or may not be able to help unclog the drain. If they can then a company like roto-rooter or a landscape company that does drainage systems most likely can. One they have come out and accessed the drainage to ensure pipes are clear or clogged and have unclogged everything you should be good to go.

You can do all of this work yourself but I don’t recommend it. Cleaning gutters really only takes a bucket, a ladder, some gloves and courage. However, many people not comfortable or used to being on ladders and roofs can put themselves at serious risk of falling. If the downspout is clogged you will end up needing a drill to remove it and reinstall it after unclogging and if the drain pipe is clogged you’ll need a snake or other tools to unclog it. It may be a costly job if you are having to buy everything without taking into account the time to do it. That’s why I recommend hiring an experienced professional that has good referrals or reviews.

Another good option is to look into installer gutter guards. There are many gimmicks out there that don’t work or are overpriced. Take into account how much the gutter cleaning each year costs when deciding to have gutter guards installed. Also make sure you know what type of guard the gutter guy is installing.
