Mama duck and her nest next to Colleyville Nature Center

Working close to the Nature Center in Colleyville, TX

Growing up in the area near the nature center, I frequently visited and enjoyed fishing, cycling, and exploring all the streams, paths, ponds, plants, and animals we could spot in the nature center. I have come across many animals that have ventured too far from the nature reserve, while providing lawn service in the Mill Creek neighborhood in Colleyville, Texas. This neighborhood backs up to several ponds and the Colleyville Nature Center. Once I had to rescue a turtle that made its way in to a clients backyard. When I showed up to a sprinkler repair, I noticed the small turtle and scooped it up in a box and returned it to the nearest pond.

This time, it was early spring around March and I was doing a garden bed cleanup for a longtime customer and friend in the Mill Creek neighborhood. I was half way through the job, I came across a first for me. To my surprise, I found a duck nesting in the garden bed that sits above the swimming pool. We slowly eased the mama away so we could finish our trimming and I snapped this quick picture. Wow, a whole dozen eggs. The mama stuck around wading back and forth anxiously in the swimming pool until we finished up trimming on several Indian hawthorne shrubs, palm trees, crepe mrytles and asian jasmine vine in the garden bed.
